Waiting signifies the passing of time, breakdown of routine and habit–a pause. What happens during this pause? Caught up in motionless activity, one is almost driven into insanity, brought by the violence of anticipation and expectation. How do we measure time? By the number of cigarettes we smoke or sum of games lost? Or cans and bottles of beer or wine consumed. Sometimes, its waiting for the train that never comes on time, unreturned phone calls, a lover stuck in traffic or even like broken promises. Passing time is like crossing the in between spaces of limbo into the promise of un/certainty. And while waiting induces boredom, pleasure silently creeps up as we pass through this brief mom ent of uncertainty, like new adventures waiting to unfold.
Extended periods of waiting is a collaborative multimedia research/performance project between Filipino and Malaysian artists in contemporary dance, video, technical theater and sound. The project delves into the violence and frailty evoked by waiting and passing time. Together performers and audience move back and forth into inertia, potentiality, pauses and stillness. Where is the dance and when does it arrive?

An independent initiative supported by Rimbun Dahan presented in cooperation with The Annexe and Green Papaya Art Projects.

duration: 45 mins to 1 hour
