Nio+Mie:
Nio + Mie is created based on parables of a couple in love
and what they experience in a variety of shades. We are each other’s playthings and as such the representation of companionship in this collection come in the form of toys. We all have our favorite toy and we care for them in an un-biased, unique way and they bring us comfort and consolation. There are times when even our favorite toy cannot bring us cheer or make us forget pain but until the end of our journey in this life, we never forget the joy they brought us.

Fengde:
Fengde is a free-form, improvised electronica duo, and it’s the side project of the two main players from DianBang - Chuan Fung and Dickson. Both players have their own unique styles. Dickson uses lots of digital effects and gadgets to play multifaceted electronic sounds while Chuan Fung’s style is towards the retro and create a nostalgic atmosphere with analogue equipment.

The Ensemble:
The Ensemble is a multimedia performance project focusing on cross-disciplinary improvised performance. It is formed in March 2010 and its players are not fixed. The Ensemble is open to collaborate with performers in various mediums, such as music, video, dance, poetry reading and live painting. Past players of The Ensemble includes Yong Yandsen, Kok Siew Wai, Au Sow Yee, Goh Lee Kwang, Ng Chor Guan, Ronnie Khoo, David Lim, Kotaro Tanaka, Kristen Nilson Oma and more.

SiCKL Open Lab series is an art laboratory for artists to gather, show works and networking. SiCKL provides a free and open platform for artistic expression, improvisations, experimentation, learning and collaboration. We welcome artists from all disciplines.

Join us for this unique DIY mini art festival with no budget but lots of “big hearts”!

SiCKL presents a colorful weekend celebrating creative and irrepressible contemporary works in visual art, music, dance, poetry, film/video and performance on 6-8 August 2010 in Melaka! This DIY, mini alternative art festival takes place at non-conventional venues: a cozy guesthouse inhabiting a heritage building, and a local bar. Featuring established and emerging artists that are open to art experimentation, the festival has gathered 50 over artists, dancers, musicians and performers from Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Singapore, Japan, Scotland and USA to join the art feast! Visual art, dance, video and performances will happen throughout days and nights at Sama-sama Guesthouse, and night music gigs will take place at Karabau Rock Bar.

SGMAAF 2010 is a truly grass-root, DIY, “no-budget” mini art festival. It is solely supported by the enthusiastic and selfless souls with a desire to make something humble but excellent happen in the community. The festival does not obtain any official funding. Enthusiastic individuals provide in-kind supports such as venue and equipment sponsorship in a completely voluntary, non-profit manner. All participated artists have been amazingly generous to contribute time and energy to create work for the festival without allowance. These selfless artists are the backbones of SGMAAF 2010. Our effort proves that it is possible to produce an excellent art event with quality content, without surrendering to established authorities and big budgets.

There will be paintings, drawings and installation works exhibited at Sama-sama Guesthouse by visual artists such as Wong Perng Fey, Ragazza 88, Hee Chee Way, Lim Keh Soon, Wong Eng Leong, Wong Min Lik, Tuan Nini Farhana and more. Artist Tey Beng Tze will be doing “dream drawing” where he’ll create drawings real-time as a performance, throughout the duration of the festival. A room dedicated to Yong Ching Sui (1975-2006) will be installed, as a tribute to a talented artist and a good friend. Singaporean artists Urich Lau, Jeremy Chu, Wong Yip Kai, Raymond Yap and Ezzam Rahman will present us with video art, installation and performance. The festival will feature local video artists Au Sow Yee, Kok Kai Foong, Alison Khor, and artists from Japan - Katsuyuki Hatori, Eiji Azuma, Koji Tambata and Kotaro Tanaka, in which Tanaka will be performing live with local improvised musicians and dancers. Adding to the fun is poet Tshiung Han See; singer-song writers Azmyl Yunor, Jerome Kugan, Melaka very own Ika Hwang and the violently melancholy SCAM; one man band Silent Keat, and the hilariously rebellious Ciplak. The highlight will be The Abang Guard, featuring some “father figures” in the punk/sound/noise scene with Joe Kidd, Bullet and Zai Kuning (Singapore). Local dance troupe Lapar lab will present dance piece “The Campus Thought” while David Lim and dancers “inhabiting” different corners of the guesthouse throughout the days; and alt invites us to join their “experiments in light”. ARTISTS' BIOS

During his early musical education Rainer Wiens studied guitar with John Becker, Allan Torak and Tony Braden, as well as jazz harmony with Barry Harris, but soon diverged from standard jazz practices and began leading his own groups in the late 1970s. In 1978, Wiens formed the left-field jazz group Silk Stockings as a vehicle for his own writing. He was co-founder with Jan Komarek of Sound Image Theatre. His published work is in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. By 2000 was leading the Afro-beat group Follow Follow, with a CD recorded in 2005. In recent recording projects, he played on the CD Speaking in Tongues with
percussionist Ganesh Anandan and violinist Malcolm Goldstein, and on Up North with Anandan. Since 2007 he also leads the avant-garde group, Dream Algebra, who play his rhythm-based structured improvisations and compositions. Wiens has presented rhythm and improvisation workshops to musicians, dancers, actors; and media and music students.

Andra McCartney is an associate professor of Communication Studies atConcordia University, Montreal, Canada, where she teaches courses on sound production, reflexivity studies, and sound theory. She received her PhD in Music from the York University in Toronto, with a dissertation on the soundscape work of Vancouver composer Hildegard Westerkamp. McCartney is well-known internationally for her research on issues of gender, creation,
sound, and technology. She is a soundwalk artist, leading public walks and creating gallery installations, recordings, performances and radio works. She has presented public soundwalks, performances and installations at festivals and conferences in Canada, UK, Finland, Germany, US and the Netherlands. Her works can be heard on the internet, on CBC radio, and on CDs produced by Deep Wireless, Terra Nova, and the Canadian Electroacoustic
Community.

Florian Schmeiser is a sound and media artist, based in Vienna, Austria. Works in the fields of soundperformance, installation and public art. Works with Susanne Schuda as schuda/schmeiser. Degree in visual media, University of Applied Arts, Vienna at Valie Export, Peter Weibel, Steina Vasulka, Karel Dudesek. Florian Schmeiser does an electronic pop-soundart-performance, a onemanshow with dark songs from the past up to today with coverversions of franz schubert, pink floyd, soundgarden and others. The sound is an avantgarde-retro-hybrid, a mixture of classical instruments combined with abstract electronics, coming from a selfcreated instrument: a barcodescanner, transformed to a soundmachine, that generates music out of everyday-life products. His passion for music during adolescent years propels him towards this fascinating arena. Chor Guan started his career as professional music composer during his years in London. His diverse professional credits include music for concert, film, theater, dance, exhibition and multimedia. His music has been performed in a wide variety of mediums including orchestral, choral, chamber, and electronic music. His work demonstrates an excellent integration of the classical and the contemporary.

1. Lapar Lab (Local Artist Performing Arts Region)“LAPAR” means ‘hungry’ or ‘desire’ from the Malay language. It indicates the serious aspiration and strong cordiality to the professionalism and the artistic creation of performing arts. LAPAR Lab was conceptualized by Low Shee Hoe, who graduated from Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. This is a non-profit organization and it provides a platform or a space to publish works of performing arts and visual arts, through the support, sponsor and cooperation from the each member. www.laparlab. com

2. David Lim & Iylia: David's retrogressive foray into faux-modernism has been accelerated by his love for amorphous improvisation, his dabbling in nouveau cirque, his fascination with Wikipediafied art movements, and his YouTubing of contemporary popisms, although he attests to a high probability, statistically speaking, of being a Philistine, irreligiously speaking, in each and every one of them.

3. Sarah Angus is an Australian artist. She completed Masters in Visual Arts at Queensl and College of Art in Brisbane (Griffith University, 2008). Her arts practice has been influenced by extensive travel and work in communities through Asia, Africa and Australia. Her creative work - whether sound-based, video installation or paintings – is a visceral response and analysis of what she explains as her social mythology. Born in rural Victoria, Australia, 1983. Currently living in Desa Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.

4. Upon returning to Malaysia in 2006, Ng Chor Guan collaborated actively with theatrical artists and choreographers diversify his works into a new era. To name a few, theatre productions include Antigone, Okiku- A Tragedy Retold, The Lost and The Ecliptic and Break-ing. Dance collaborations include The Curse of The Forbidden Palace, Whispers of Love, The ‘R’ Adventurous Drift and Ballet Nutcracker. With all his hard to show for, it wasn’t a surprise that he was nominated for 2008 Cameronian Arts Awards Most Promising Artist.

Our beloved friend, dancer Donna Miranda, visiting from Manila, will be performing her multimedia piece, "Listen, little brother", together with guitarist Aziz. The Self-conscious Acronym(ed) Man is back with more incredible stories and love+hate songs for us to sing along ("really?!") . Azmyl Yunor (guitar), Yong Yandsen (sax) & Kok Siew Wai (voice) are going to play together as an improv trio for the first time. There'll be a mysterious stand-up comedian

'Metamorphose' by Alan McLean & Goh Lee Kwang
Alan McLean and Goh Lee Kwang will perform a short extract from a work in progress 'Metamorphose' for electric guitar and sound mixer.

Goh Lee Kwang grew up in Penang and studied visual art at the Malaysian Institute of Art in Kuala Lumpur. His sound work includes sample-based pieces and installations. He adopted the stereo DJ mixer with feedback loop as his main instrument in 2004 and performed extensively across western Europe. His awards and honors include the Akademie Schloss Solitude Fellowship, Klangraum Fellowship, and Künstlerhäuser Worpswede Fellowship 2008.

Alan McLean studied Philosophy in his native Scotland and started playing electric guitar two years ago. On this occasion, the duo use visual art as a focus for their sound work and as a source of compositional structure. The music takes its name from a print by the Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher. Part devised, part improvisation, it exploits the sound possibilities of electronic feedback and simple guitar pedals.

Tomonari Nishikawa (Experimental Film)
Nishikawa started filmmaking in 2001 at SUNY Binghamton, where he pursued his BA in Cinema and Philosophy. His film and video pieces have been shown at major film festivals, including New York Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, San Francisco International Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Berinale. Over the past years, Nishikawa made several film installation works using pinhole techniques, and such works have been exhibited at San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Still Motion in Toronto, and Headlands Center for the Arts. He serves as a Board of Directors for Canyon Cinema, a distribution company for experimental films, and works as a guest advisor of Yebisu International Festival for Arts. Nishikawa currently resides in Bangkok as an Asian Intellectual Fellowship from The Nippon Foundation, researching on experimental cinema in Southeast Asia.

Karen Johannesen (Experimental Film)
Graduated from San Francisco Art Institute, Karen Johannesen is an experimental filmmaker now based in Chicago. She works with small gauge films.

SiCKL presents Improv Lab @ FINDARS as a monthly art laboratory for artists, musicians and performers who are interestedwho want to experiment with improvisation. In every lab, 4 artists will be featured to perform a short set each (15 mins). The lab will then end with a final jamming session by all artists. We encourage artists from different disciplines working together. Artists from all disciplines are welcome, as long as you can work out a way for yourself to improvise with your art medium.

Improvisation is indeed the first stage of any creation, and then composition comes in when we arrange our ideas, elaborate some and abandon the others. There is immense energy and creativity in the improvisation stage where rules are constantly being created, worked on and abandoned. In improvised art and music, this process goes on and on, moving into the unknown, of unexpected possibilities. Improvisation requires a great deal of concentration, communication, interaction and awareness among the performers because there will be no “2nd take”. There is a certain urgency in improvisation as the final performance/art product itself because you create as you think, simultaneously, and the process IS the final product itself. As improvisers, we have to be alert, ready and respond quickly when we create this “NOW” together. Many contemporary artists, dancers and musicians have explored improvisation in great depth. Free jazz musicians such as
Peter Broztmann, Hank Bennik and Derek Bailey; dancers such as Merce Cunningham, have all worked extensively with improvisation.

Katsuyuki HATTORI, (B. 1973) is a Japanese video artist based in Tokyo. Hattori, who graduated from San Francisco Art Institute, co-founded several important video art organizations in Tokyo such as Tokyo: Spread Video Art Project, Art Lab, Goldenshit and Video Art Center. He has collaborated with choreographers, contemporary dancers, poets and musicians. Hattori’s work has been shown in Spain, Canada, Ireland, Australia, France, Mexico, China and Indonesia, amongst many other coutries.

SATO Hiroaki, (b.1962) is a video artist cum musician who graduated from Nihon University, College of Art. He is also active in teaching video making and theory of image technology at the Nippon Engineering College and Nihon University College of Art, Department of Cinema. Sato also writes, mostly on video art.

Kotaro TANAKA, (b. 1979) in Tokyo, Japan. Tanaka is a filmmaker, involves in the VJ Bysexual Team and a part-time film lecturer. Tanaka is the representative for Tokyo Eizo Brig and a member of SVP2 (Spread Videoart Project 2). He exhibits his works at home and abroad. Tanaka’s main theme in his works is "gazing". He is trying to expand the meaning of it and the concept of it. Tanaka is also interested in narrating "stories" without common scripts, by just vision and audito.

“Code” – Contemporary music composition by Ng Chor Guan

Ng Chor Guan (composer, laptop and electronics)

Ng Chor Guan gains his Bachelor of Arts (HONS) Music in Composition from Middlesex University in London . His diverse professional credits include music for concert, film, theater, dance, exhibition and multimedia. His music has been performed in a wide variety of mediums including orchestral, choral, chamber, and electronic music. Ng has participated in theatrical productions such as Antigone, Okiku- A Tragedy Retold, The Lost and The Ecliptic, Break-ing., The Curse of The Forbidden Palace , Whispers of Love, The ‘R’ Adventurous Drift and Nutcracker. He was nominated for 2008 Cameronian Arts Awards Most Promising Artist.

Yong Yandsen (bass clarinet)

Co-founder of SicKL, Yandsen is the veteran lead singer and band leader of the explosive Chinese rock band MoXuan who has now ventured into the realm of contemporary, music, free jazz and improvised music. He has acted in the independent short film by Kok Kai Foong, “Yandsen Can Do”. Besides making music, Yandsen is very good with driving directions.

Tham Kar Mun (clarinet)

Member of EMACM (Experimental Musicians & Artists Corporative Malaysia), Tham is the veteran guitarist of Chinese rock band ChongYang. In recent years, he has been exploring music in contemporary composition, improvisation and free jazz. Tham reads Lao Tze and likes to drink tea, slowly.

Kok Siew Wai (voice)

Co-founder of SicKL, a video artist and voice improviser. Siew Wai has spent much time organizing art events nowadays. She wanted to be a rocker during her teenage years but it never happened. Instead, she has been inspired greatly by composer Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening practice during her 7-year stay in USA , where it is a total contrast to rock.

JacAl Map – Experimental sounds
JacAl Map is a duo established in 2007. Jack is a musician and sound engineer while Alison is a student in New Era College Drama and Visuals Department. Their works uses sound extracted from everyday lives to create and explore sound that has an imaginative quality.

Ben Kong – Stand-up Show
He thinks he is funny, we all think he is funny. He doesn't want to reveal too much about himself in case he is not funny. Come meet the mystery man and ask him yourself!

Azmyl Yunor is folker. He plays acoustic guitar, harmonica and sings his own songs. He records those songs and sells them. He also plays electric guitar, drums, keyboard, piano and the concertina. He plays in several bands. He is also a street busker whenever the need arises. When he is not, he teaches for a living and lives to learn. He is also conscious of the confining nature of popular music format and structure. When needed, he takes a vacation.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS/MUSICIANS:

CHAN SEAU HUVI is a performance artist and a video artist. She is graduated from l’école superièure d’art d’Aix en Provence, France. Huvi starts producing videos for her performance since 2002. She is currently living and working in Kuala Lumpur.

AFFENDI HJ RAMLI born in Ipoh, Malaysia, currently he is a doctoral student, under supervision by Dr. Hasnizam Abdul Wahid at the Faculty of Arts and Creative, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. Recently he has won the “Best Jury’s Selection Award 2007” in Bourges, Paris. Affendi Hj. Ramli is one of the music lecturers in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tg. Malim, Perak, lecturing composition, violin and music technology. He received his Bachelor of Music from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia and Master of Arts in Audio Production from University Of Westminster, United Kingdom.
RONNIE KHOO is a recording enthusiast who works from a home studio. His projects include playing in rock bands, scoring for independent film, and tampering with electronic equipment to make them squeal in unexpected ways.

JAZMOK is a malaysian-based sound artist. His favourite music instruments are mobile gadgets,as the medium of producing his sound.He is interested in malay classical rhythm and other native cultures in malaysia.The sound characteristic of Jazmok is describe as various of oscilator wave and ambient with gong atmosphere. He loves experimenting with sound and had produce several of interactive installation while performing.
FAHMI FADZIL is a performer and writer. He is a member of Five Arts Centre, principal coordinator of Projek Wayang, and partner at Bright Lights At Midnight. Initiated in 2006, Projek Wayang is an experimentation group interested to search, investigate, explore and construct forms of wayang that resonates within an urban, contemporary and cosmopolitan context.

LISA FOO is the co-founder of FOTA Design in 2007 and a design practice in architecture, interior and sculpture. Graduated with BA in Architecture from the University of New South Wales, Sydney at the end of 2003, and after a spell of almost two years with a large commercial practice, Lisa has reveled in the opportunity to design an experimental private house in Kuala Lumpur to strike out on her own. Her involvement in the arts emerged in November 2007 when she was an artist participant at numerous 'Arts for Grabs' event organized by the Annexe Gallery, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur. In the event, her collaboration with her friend formed LFSS and created luminous eco-light sculpture from recycled plastic bottles.

As the existentialists say, the only meaning is this life is ours to create. With that comes great freedom and meaning. But also, an abyss or our greatest nightmare.

Bio:
A lover of all forms of arts, from painting to photography to film to music, he is always challenging himself to come up with genuinely original works. Yes, some say everything has been done before and there is no such thing as pure originality. But he feels it’s something worth striving for, though in the end it may not exist. Deeply connected with nature, he feels most at home in the thick of a forest, with all the wild creatures. He expounds uniqueness and hates the globalisation and homogenisation of humanity. Still struggling between the gray areas of believing in something and keeping it to himself versus spreading it, since he believes that the main reason of strife and wars is one party trying to change another’s views to that of her own. Presenting two nights of handmade music that blur the lines between electro-acoustic, free improvisation, industrial, free jazz, performance art and freeform-noise, and will be paired with the intensity of live video performances (vjing), exquisite homemade machines, real guitars, absurd costumes, and even more live action on stage. FETE DE LA WASAQUE will be hosted by SABAW Media Art Kitchen in cooperation with Greenpapaya art projects and Mag:net Galleries.

Expect two nights of insanity going on and on till the break of dawn at Green Papaya art space and Mag:net cafe Katipunan - including one of the very extreme and rare performances from Australia's Justice Yeldham. Cavite's E.X.I.S.T. sound art collective will electrify our nerves thru their homemade electronics and circuit-bend gadgets, while Manila's New Media Arts Manila (N.M.A.M) will surely melt your brain with rapidfire audiovideo-shrapnel. Alongside the live video performances of N.M.A.M., performance and media artist Mannete Villariba and editor Edsel Abesamis will provide video assualt as well.

On the first night, Tengal's Gangan Series Project will manifest itself this time as the Gangan Trio featuring Tengal on no-input mixer, drums and objects, Blums Borres on guitar, Caliph8 on turntables, while Tad Ermitano takes off his vj hat and conducts the trio. Circuit-bender wiz Erick Calilan (Ugong) will challenge his old band mate from the now defunct Sound Existence, PJ Soliven (Nyangbinghi), alongside the live script video programming of Mannette Villariba. Not to mention the avant-jazz/punk outfit, Radioactive Sago Project will perform improvised electro-acoustic "WASAK" music written and conducted by Francis de Veyra; while walls of industrial soundscapes of doom will break room walls with the heavy-hitters, Trojan Whores.

On the following night, Blums Borres will invite you to his all live, all improvised ambient solo guitar lounge. Tengal and Tad collaborate on an audio-visual "cooking show": Tengal stirs the complex and unstable nature of the sonic textures from the mixer, both live and processed - letting it boil and simmer; while Tad Ermitano who literaly "cooks up" non-newtonian fluid (i.e. ketchup, starch, suspensions, paint, blood and shampoo) into a "visual soup" using a loudspeaker, face-up, as a pot with cameras positioned on top of it. Elemento will drive some nerve-shattering noise with their intricately-crafted sonic machines, while analogue noise maker Inconnuictu will team up with ambient electronica ace Blend:er, and Ugong.

And finally Australia's leading audio artist and founder of the pioneering Australian record label Dual Plover, Lucas Abela (Justice Yeldham), will kill off whatever brain cells you have left on both nights!

SABAW ends the year with a wall shaking acoustic-meets-digital assault stirring acts on two nights of positive madness.

PERFORMERS:

Lucas Abela aka JUSTICE YELDHAM has been performing for well over 15 years and is one of the leaders of Australian "noise music".
His early performances were crazed extensions of turntablism. Instead of turntables he'd use motors turning metal discs at 2000 rpm, and instead of record needles he'd use skewers or knives. He once used a glove that he had imbedded with record needles - Freddy Krueger style.
Incorporating everything from electro-acoustic trampolines, amplified samurai swords to high powered turntables constructed from sewing machine motors into his performances, in recent years he's been using sheets of glass that he blows through, screams through, bites and breaks.
Lucas has toured over 30 countries with this new act, appeared on numerous television shows, and even crashed a John Peel session at the BBC.

BLEND:ER is an electronic music creator and a noise enthusiast who lives in Cavite, Philippines. He started experimenting with audio acrobatics and technoid sonic landscapes in 1999. Being included in various album anthologies like Mood Swing Theater Volume 1 (2004) released by Kittenwhip Compilation and S.A.B.A.W. Anthology of Noise, Electronic, and Experimental Music (2004), Blend:er aka (Cris Garcimo) has often collaborated with E.X.I.S.T., SABAW and Electronica Manila artists.

BLUMS BORRES guitarist and media artist who experiments with sound, video, and animation. Formerly a technical director at Toei Animation Philippines, he has a BA in Multimedia Design from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His work has been featured at the Australian Center Moving Images (ACMI), and in cinemas and television in Japan. His career in post production spans over 14 years and has involved himself in both professional productions and education. He currently teaches 3d animation at DLSU-CSB.

CALIPH8 is a beat smith, graffiti bomber and soothsayer. A lynch-pin of various groups and ensembles, he's probably the most sought after sound manipulator in the Philippines. A graduate of the U.P. College of Fine Arts, his output extends to more than just sniffing aerosol paint and flexing wrists with fat markers--he also creates visuals and projects them while manipulating audio and creates sound collage.
He is a member of A.M.P.O.N. hiphop collective, electronica group Drip, and was part of Downearf, a trueschool hiphop trio back in 1997.

EDSEL ABESAMES is a video editor / motion graphics person / director / racketeer / guitarist / poser / anime fan / overweight 32 year old / discontent drunkard. That about sums it up.

ELEMENTO is the brainchild of experimental multi-media artist Lirio Salvador, and has created a number of experimental electronic instruments based on his own concept of ethno-industrial art/music. Probably the most influential and astonishing homemade circuit-benders and instrument builders in the country, he established the E.X.I.S.T. sound art collective back in 2002. He creates his assemblage of musical instruments using day to day materials that are found in his present environment, including bicycle gears, drain cleaning springs and stainless steel tubes.

INCONNU ICTU a.k.a Roger Llagas Lopez is a post-musician, experimental composer-improviser, multi-instrumentalist, visual art enthusiast who resides in the shoe capital of the Philippines. "Inconnu Ictu(s)" means an "unknown man's blow or a stroke", as a sound constructor he explores his interest by using obsolete electronic gadgets, pedal fx boxes, defective rhythm consoles, found objects, d.i.y microphones and circuit-bent electronics.

MANNET VILLARIBA is a performance artist, painter, sound artist, visual programmer and designer. He has been active in diverse fields of art and design - including research and development. Yielding the outputs of sounds, images, and light through analyzing and transforming the numerical values gained from various sensors and input devices, he is a visual artist pursuing sensual peculiarity and interaction.

NYANGBINGHI (PJ Soliven) and UGONG (Erick Calilan) used to perform together as a duo called Sound Existence back in 2005. They are active leaders and members of E.X.I.S.T., taking part in producing shows, worshops, exhibitions both in Cavite and Manila. While Nyangbinghi utilizes mainly a laptop as an instrument, UGONG performs using home-made "cracked" electronics that are circuit-bent and rewired to make electronic squeels, blips, hisses, and clicks.

RADIOACTIVE SAGO PROJECT is probably the country's most successful avant bands that crossed over to mainstream music, having released 3 successful albums and have been radio darlings 'til this day. Instead of playing their usual popular hits, they will perform an experimental electro-acoustic piece by Francis de Veyra, the group's main composer. Francis studied atonal and modern composition in the conservatory of music in the University of the Philippines where he was almost sued and banned from the university for his infamous recital piece called "Wasakan".
"TACSIYAPO", is a new piece which will premiere on the 14th. The composer explains: "TACSIYAPO is an expression in kapampangan [a local dialect] meant and used to vent out anger and frustration. The piece was inspired by an interesting phenomena in a restaurant in Tarlac where they have people throw anything in a wall be it cups, plates, cats, or even TVs. Upon throwing them on the wall (that is painted with vandals of the words that are 'cancers' of our society), they shout 'Tacsiyapo!'. This piece tries to 'throw' an array of sounds and textures, wherein the performers will try to vent out their angst, not physically, but thru sound. The group will use electronic music, spoken word, bass and electric guitars, kaoss pads, percussions and the audience."

TAD ERMITANO is a media artist, writer and filmmaker. As far as the media art goes, he is interested in algorithmic/procedural editing and composition, new uses for the moving image and have been lately drifting into elementary robotics. His work "Quartet" was exhibited in the recently concluded International Symposium for Electronic Arts (ISEA) in Singapore.

TENGAL is a Manila-based interdisciplinary media artist, composer-musician, media art impresario, and filmmaker. He curates and organizes media art projects, has collaborated with various artists, and has performed in various shows in the Philippines and abroad. He attended the Berlinale Talent Campus 2006, in Berlin, Germany; the 5th Asia-Europe Foundation Art Camp: Re-Vision Bangkok | New Media Art and Interactivity, in Thailand; and most recently at Cellsbutton II: Yogyakarta International Media Art Festival, in Indonesia. He founded SABAW in 2005.

TROJAN WHORES is composed of Pow Martinez, Sam Kiyoumarsi, and Thomas Mcwalter, and they create harsh industrial soundscapes with doom metal elements.

Southeast Asian Video Screening will be held at Valentine Willie Fine Art Project Room
from 20 September - 11 October 2008. The exhibition highlights some of the most
exciting and challenging screen-based practices from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and
the Philippines.

Working in collaboration with curators around the region, the screening brings together
video works and experimental films from four neighbouring countries, providing
Malaysian audience with a rare opportunity to study and compare the various trends and
styles in video art that has emerged through the different contexts and cultures that have
made Southeast Asia a diverse and complex region.

From Indonesia, art curator Agung Hujatnikajennong features in his broad yet in-depth
survey, some of the most exciting artists from Bandung, Yogyakarta and Jakarta working
with the video medium. Manila-based film critic and lecturer Alexis Tioseco will compile a
selection of video works that not only looks into the formal innovation of emerging Filipino
names but also engages with the socio-cultural history of the nation.

'The More Things Change...', curated by David Teh, will showcase Thai experimental
shorts from this year's Bangkok Experimental Film Festival. Last but not least, Simon Soon and Erna Dyanty will curate a Malaysian survey that identifies various approaches and trajectories in local experimental film-making.

In compiling a survey of Malaysian video works for the Southeast Asian Video Screening, all attempts at defining an all-over thematic or visual trend from our selection were largely abandoned. Instead, we began charting the various forms of experimentation that video artists have engaged in. This, in turn, complicates the discourse that experimental video exists as a uniformed aesthetic that is largely esoteric and inaccessible. Interestingly, we found that recent video works highlighted in our Malaysian screening can be contextualis ed within three main trajectories.

Filmmakers such as Azharr Rudin and Nazim Esa who use short films or experimental videos as their platform for bolder exploration of the medium constitute the first category. While they are just as comfortable with working on the feature film format, often it is through their short films that the alternative and interesting approaches to narration are explored.

Contrary to the fictive immersion of the short narratives, we have also identified a number of filmmakers and video artists such as Chris Chong and Chi Too who have worked within the documentary genre. Often, these works are more critical of the language of visual representation than their usual documentary counterpart, playing with and investigating into new structures of signification that can affect a different understanding and experience of the social as well as the personal.

The third trajectory can be considered to be geographically specific and formalist in orientation. Au Sow Yee, Kok Siew Wai and Chan Seau Huvi are all active participants in SicKL, a studio for experimentation with various artistic disciplines. Monthly performances are held in their Cheras (a suburb in Kuala Lumpur) studio, featuring poetry recitals as well as sound, video and performance art. They represent both a more performative approach to video art - video as a documentation of female bodily drives (Siew Wai and Huvi) - as well as an interest in exploring abstraction through the video medium (Sow Yee). As such their works often push the boundaries of video art further, turning to consider the fundamental aspects of the medium.

Last but not least, we have also included a short work by Idora Alhabsih, who is still completing her studies in filmmaking overseas, as an indication of a direction that an emerging generation of artists who have increasingly found video to be both an affordable and challenging medium to base their artistic practice on.

Across these disparate trajectories, Malaysian experimental video and film draw strength from its diverse approaches – short narrative, experimental documentary, video abstraction, and performative documentation. Many of them propose new visual structures of conveying meaning that disrupts the homogenised format of the feature film. Its heterogeneity, as noted by David Teh (curator of the Thai compilation), could challenge the safe experience of the easily consumable feature film, which ultimately provokes us to think more critically through its stimulating formal registers.

**IRON EGG**

is an electro-acoustic improvisation group based in Singapore featuring Darren Moore (laptop/percussion), Tim O'Dwyer (saxophone) and Brian O'Reilly (electronics/visual).

Darren Moore is an Australian musician currently based in Singapore. He is involved in various projects as a drummer and as an experimental laptop artist. He has performed and collaborated with musicians such as Jon Rose, Chris Abrahams, Scott Tinkler, Eugene Pao, Tim O'Dwyer, Will Guthrie, Eric Boeren, Wilbert de Joode, Micheal Vatcher to name a few. He has toured throughout Europe, Australia, South East Asia, Japan and the USA. Brian O'Reilly is the creator of various works for moving images/live cinema, electronic/noise music, mixed media assemblage/installation, and is a contrabassist, focusing on the integration of electronic treatments and extended playing techniques.

Timothy O'Dwyer: is a composer, saxophonist and educator working between the general areas of music known as jazz, contemporary notated music and improvised music. He has been a member of Elision Contemporary Ensemble since 1994 and was a founding member of the Melbourne cult punk-jazz group bucketrider. Following studies with Evan Parker and composer Richard Barrett in 1995 he has had the privilege of collaborating with many artists that he greatly admires including: John Butcher, Liza Lim, Bobby Previte, KK Null, Chaya Chernowin, and conceptual artists Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, and Katsushige Nakahashi. He is currently programme leader of music and lecturer in jazz at the School of Contemporary Music LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore and is a PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology studying the phenomena of identity in improvised music. His current projects include his jazz group The Tim O'Dwyer Trio and the electro-acoustic
project Iron Egg.

Since 2006, Mark Wong (b. 1982, Singapore) has been developing and refining his own vocabulary for the kazoo, a simple musical instrument traditionally considered a novelty toy. In addition to conventional humming techniques, Wong has germinated blowing, rasping and other vocal scrawlings. Playing off the feedback purity of a no-input mixer, Mark's kazoo becomes the production centre of a certain textural beauty and nervous energy.

吳俊輝為美國Bard College, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts 藝術創作碩士，美國San Francisco Art Institute藝術創作學士。他是2006年臺北雙年展的參展藝術家之一，作品曾經在世界許多著名實驗電影展以及紐約現代美術館(NYMoMa)、法國龐畢度藝術中心等知名藝術中心與美術館放映。近期更被臺北目前最具前瞻性的當代藝術畫廊之一“新苑藝術”簽約成為旗下藝術家。吳俊輝也是臺灣世新大學廣電系電影組的助理教授，也曾策劃多個影展的實驗電影單元，並曾擔任臺灣境內多個影展的評審。

Tony Wu was born in Taitung in 1966 now lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan.holds a MFA degree from Bard College, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts (U.S.A) and BFA from San Francisco Art Institute (U.S.A). He is one of the selected artists for 2006 Taipei Biennial. His experimental films have been shown in various experimental film festivals around the world, New York Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou and various other art centers and museums. JUSTICE YELDHAM (AUSTRALIA)

'What's been described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" is in fact the unique audio work of Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. By pressing his face and lips against the glass whist employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries, he turns disguarded household windows into crude musical instruments. Resulting in a wide variety of cacophonous noises that are strangely controlled and oddly musical.'

'Justice Yeldham is the latest alter-ego of Australian sound performer Lucas Abela, whose past sonic experiments were conducted under monikers like A Kombi, Dj Smallcock & Peeled Hearts Paste. Initially classed as an experimental turntablist, although his early work rarely resembled anything in the field. Early feats, saw him stab vinyl with Kruger style stylus gloves, bound on electro acoustic trampolines, drag race the popemobile across Sydney Harbour Bridge, perform deaf defying duet duels with amplified samurai swords, hospitalised by high powered turntables constructed from sewing machine motors, record chance John Peel sessions with the Flaming Lips, & be Otomo Yoshihides' favourite entry into his Ground Zero remix competition; 'Consummation' even though instead of sampling the CD he destroyed it using amplified skewers! '

'Anam was founded by Claudine Gabriel and Alan McLean who will perform a new piece, 'No Hands' as a duo. Claudine is Irish. She studied contemporary dance and performing art in the UK and performed music and dance across northern Europe, working with contemporary, popular, traditional and jazz groups. Alan studied Philosophy in his native Scotland and started playing electric guitar a year ago. Musically, 'No Hands' focusses on many ways to produce (and hear) a single note using electric guitar and electronics. Alan describes the note E as "deep blue". Claudine performs with voice, movement and the bohdran, the traditional Irish hand drum. The piece is a delicate interaction between the duo, an exchange of movement for music and music for movement.'

New at this year's HSBC Classics Piano Festival is the Young Composers Workshop, the premiere New Music event of the year.

17 young composers from around the country from Sabah to Sungai Petani are participating by submitting an original work for a chamber ensemble of flute, oboe and piano. A selection panel of established Malaysian composers chaired by Chong Kee Yong and comprising Ahmad Muriz Che Rose and Saidah Rastam will select five compositions to be workshopped and performed at a concert presentation on 13 July 2008.

A rehearsal workshop on Friday 11 July 08 at 8.30pm at Indicine is open to the public free of charge.

The Young Composers Workshop 08 culminates in a concert on 13 July 08 at Pentas 2 at 11 am. Undoubtedly THE contemporary music event of the year at home, it not only showcases the compositions of the workshop finalists, but also premieres by Malaysian composers Johan Othman and Ng Chong Lim.

You will be the first to hear Johan Othman's opera in progress in an excerpt prepared specially for this workshop titled "Dying In Order To Live" for soprano and piano. His delightful work "the dancing mouse" for voice and harp, based on texts by William Radice, also gets a Malaysian premiere after its world premiere on 16 June 08 in Hamburg. Ng Chong Lim also shares with you his new piano solo work, just as the ink dries on his brand new score. Piano Festival Competition semifinalist also makes an
encore of his competition piece, Chong Kee Yong's Splattered Landscape.

Five new works by our workshop finalists will form the centre-piece of the concert. You can expect bold, innovative styles as well as that touch of Malaysian that inevitably finds its way into our local music. Some of the pieces will be beautifully lyrical, others excitingly experimental. The submissions to the workshop have been of exceptional quality, and Malaysia's young composers are a force to be reckoned with!

Our dedicated musicians, pianists Chee Su Yen, Joyce Ho and Lee Yin Hwa together with oboist Yong How Keen and flautist Vincent Kok will perform the works of the young composers. And guest performers harpist Tan Keng Hong and soprano Chin Yen Lin join us to make this concert of premieres truly special.

The SicKL Open Lab (SOL) is launching its first season with new works in poetry, experimental music, video and film on this coming Saturday, 28 June at the Studio in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (SicKL).

SOL 0001 kicks off its first program with voice composition by Tham Kar Mun- featuring Tham Kar Mun, Yandsen, Kok Siew Wai and Wong Perng Fei; Malaysia premiere experimental video and film works by Au Sow Yee, Huvy and Wong Fe Lik; and a multidisciplinary performance with poetry and visual arts by Tan Yan Tee, Chen Lin Loong, Law Yee Wan and Looi Yook Tho.

"Robin Fox is a Melbourne based sound and visual artist currently working with live digital media in improvised, composed and installation settings.

He creates audio-visual works for the cathode ray oscilloscope, which have been released on the DVD Backscatter (Synaesthesia Records). The DVD has screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival; Mittwoschule (Berlin); 8th International New Media Arts Festival (Riga) and TRANSIT Festival (Switzerland).

Live audiovisual performances have taken place across Europe including appearances at the Netmage Festival (Bologna); Wien Modern Festival (Vienna); Noise and Glamour Festival (Moscow) and Transacoustic Festival (Auckland). This work, in constant development, is currently being realised with a high-powered, audio controlled laser system with recent performances at the Institute for Modern Art (Brisbane); NIME06 (Paris); Wellington International Jazz Festival (New Zealand); Totally Huge New Music Festival (Perth); October Contemporary Festival (Hong Kong).

A major European tour took place in May/June 2007 with laser based presentations at Musique Action Festival (Nancy, France); VENN Festival (Bristol, UK); Music Genera Festival (Szczesin, Poland) and Neia Musik Festival (Mulhouse, France) among numerous other appearances. His recent installation work Volta has featured at the RoslynOxley9 Gallery and Orange Regional Art Gallery in 2006 and in 2007 featured at the Asian Art Biennale (Tapei).

Musically, he has performed with some of the world’s leading improvisers including Jon Rose, Tony Buck, Oren Ambarchi, Lasse Marhaug, Jerome Noetinger, Clayton Thomas (Album Substation released by Room40, 2005), Erkki Veltheim, Natasha Anderson and Sean Baxter among many others and has an ongoing collaborative duo with composer/performer Anthony Pateras. This duo is documented on Coagulate released through Synaesthesia in 2003 and Flux Compendium released on eMego in 2006. He is also a member of Beta-erko, a quartet recently released on Berlin based Quecksilber label.

Fox is a regular performer and speaker at festivals around Australia (What is Music, Liquid Architecture, Electrofringe, SOOB, NowNOW, Big Day Out) and performs regularly across Europe and Asia."

Since January 2007 C.H.O.P.P.A. has been the only regular improvised music series in Singapore presenting monthly concerts showcasing the underbelly of the Singapore and regional music scenes and giving a forum for sound artists and musicians to present their work.

C.H.O.P.P.A. FESTIVAL 08 will mark 1 year of operations for the C.H.O.P.P.A. series that has been curated by Tim O’Dwyer and Darren Moore who are both originally from Australia and are current lecturers in Jazz and Pop music at LASALLE College of the Arts.

C.H.O.P.P.A. Improvised Music Festival will be truly international in 2008 bringing together 20 musicians from Japan, Malaysia, Sweden, Australia and Singapore featuring noise, electro-acoustic, lap-top, interactive sound art, free jazz and kraut rock.

Internationally respected sound artist Goh Lee Kwang, who recently returned from a 10 city tour of Europe, has a new album! His first album in three years, it is called Good Vibrations – selected solo improvisation with stereo dj mixer, released on his own label, Herbal. Recorded from concerts and studios in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Stuttgart, Rotterdam, Krems and Kuala Lumpur, the tracks were selected for their closeness to the original sound (of the mixer) without any treatment. For this launch, Lee Kwang performs different sounds every night, with materials from all 8 years of his mercurial career. There will be two video installations (world premier) and a sound installation (" Internal Pleasures" 4th Edition).

Born in Tokyo, Japan, video artist Koji Tambata will
present his Video-Music Performance series "Music
Works" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and will collaborate
with Malaysian musicians from the EMACM/SiCKL
collective. It will include the screening of "Music
Works", "Pre-Music Consciousness" and new works in
video and performance.

"Tambata’s work concerns about process and execution,
in other words, of what is happening at the moment.
This is similar to the practice of meditation. As a
music lover, Tambata finds that his philosophy and
methodology in art making is very similar to the
process of improvisation in music. Also interested in
the physical reality of energy flow, he has found a
way to apply this understanding in art and music.
Tambata shoots live music performances, then
re-arranges the images and adds new footage,
visual/sound effects during editing, and finally
creates a new audio-visual composition in video. He’ll
then incorporate the pre-edited video in his live
video-music performance. This is “MUSIC WORKS”, his
long-term video-music project since 1996.

Tambata regards the act of video shooting as a
meditative activity where he is witnessing and
documenting another meditative activity by the
musicians who are performing improvised music. Video
shooting is a very quiet and minimal act. It involves
movements, but they are very subtle, almost unnoticed.
It is like the silent moments in music. Tambata
appreciates this quietness as something essential to
reach a kind of spiritual awareness. In his
multidisciplinary work, video shooting, editing and
screening run parallel with one another, and

music. And how the ancient Chinese philosophy Taoism
in which he regards as “the first and the last
philosophy”, has influenced his work and his
perception of nature and the world.

letting it vibrates through its hardness and softness,

guitarist, is presented with few edits, nicely

augmented with various post-production effects: full

screen & letterbox, color & warm sepia halftones &

stop motion lend to the more-than-front-row intimacy

of the video. Bailey is at his best during the

51-minute set, which includes his telling a story

about working in a guitar shop in the 1960s

(accompanying himself as he does in his much

sought-after "chats") and a few moments of traditional

playing on the vintage Epiphone hollow-body he bought

on Staten Island.

Eric Chenaux experiments with song forms as a guitar player, composer and singer with an affection for balladeers. Chenaux has been improvising since about 1995. He has played improvised guitar with many people including: Han Bennink, Allison Cameron, Rob Clutton, Ryan Driver, Murray Favro, Nick Fraser, Mike Kane, Michael Moore, Kurt Newman, Stephen Parkinson, Pauline Oliveros and more.

MaxMSP is a real-time software/programming environment, which has a broad range of artistic application ranging from electronic music to media installations. It was first developed in the 80s at IRCAM (computer music institute in Paris) by Miller S Puckette and Max Mathews. It is popular software utilized by sound/visual/new media artists interested in real-time performance and interactive installation environments.

This is a beginner’s introductory MaxMSP workshop of how to operate the software, in hope that the workshop will spark participant’s interest and provide a new door in pursuing his or her creative endeavors using video and sound. Participants are expected to bring their own laptops to attend the workshop. Japanese video artist Koji Tambata will present a solo multidisciplinary event with video installations, a video screening, live music and live video (capturing and mixing). He will collaborate with several local musicians from SiCKL (Studio in Cheras, KL).

Tambata’s work concerns about process and execution, in other words, of what is happening at the moment. This is similar to the practice of meditation. As a music lover, Tambata finds that his philosophy and methodology in art making is very similar to the process of improvisation in music. Also interested in the physical reality of energy flow, he has found a way to apply this understanding in art and music. Tambata shoots live music performances, then re-arranges the images and adds new footage, visual/sound effects during editing, and finally creates a new audio-visual composition in video. He’ll then incorporate the pre-edited video in his live video-music performance. This is “MUSIC WORKS”, his long-term video-music project since 1996.
